3D Scans of Bullets of Interest from the Noblis/NIST Bullet Black Box Study

This dataset includes 3D scans of 148 bullets. These bullets were selected as the comparison sets (Csets) from the BulletBB study that had the highest error rates, selected for 3d scanning for future use in training and research. The bullets were scanned using Ballistic Identification System (BIS) EVOFINDER, and Quantum 3D Microscope (Q3M). Please review "BulletBB_3DScans_BulletOfInterest-Public_2025-08-25.xlsx" for detailed information on each firearm, ammunition, and measurement information. More information on the BulletBB can be found in the following reference: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.forsciint.2024.112287

X3P datafiles follow ISO25178-72.

- The dataset includes 3d scans of 148 bullets.

- The dataset includes 3334 Quantum .x3p files, 936 Evofinder .x3p files, and 148 native format Evofinder .bul files.

- Evofinder scans used version 6.7.1.148.

- Quantum scans used Q3M v1.2.

- A complete set of .x3p files for a bullet with 5 lands and grooves will include 6 Evofinder .x3p files, and 22 Quantum .x3p files.

- A complete set of .x3p files for a bullet with 6 lands and grooves will include 7 Evofinder .x3p files, and 26 Quantum .x3p files.

- In general, A-quality (good) bullets have complete sets of Evofinder and Quantum .x3p files: 125 of the 131 A-quality bullets are complete for both. The 17 lower-quality bullets (B,C,D-quality) generally do not have complete sets of .x3p files.

- The dataset also includes the Evofinder .xml metadata files.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Terminology:
- "Csets of interest" are the Comparison Sets that resulted in the highest error rates in the BulletBB study.

- "Exemplar sets" are additional KQsets (Known vs Questioned), included so that every Firearm: Ammunition combination in the Csets of interest has at least 3 A-quality exemplars.

- This dataset includes 148 bullets, grouped in 12 "Groups". [GroupA..GroupL]

- Each "Group" includes multiple Csets for the same 1 or 2 firearms, using 1 or 2 different types of ammunition.

- The 12 Groups include 16 "Csets of interest" and 26 "Exemplar sets"
