Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) Ocean Surface Wind Vectors (25 km and 50 km)

The Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) real aperture radar is a C-band dual swath fan beam radar scatterometer onboard the European MetOp satellite series. The instrument uses radar to measure backscatter to determine wind speed and direction over the surface of the ocean. ASCAT Level-2 ocean surface wind products are generated by NOAA with ASCAT L1B data from the European Organization for Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). Wind vector retrievals are processed using the CMOD5.n geophysical model function (GMF) developed by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) scatterometer team and adapted for the NOAA environment. This product provides global ocean surface wind data at 25 and 50 kilometer resolution. The data are produced by the NOAA Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) and are distributed by the Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS) as 3 minute files in the netCDF-4 file format with attributes included.
