Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Level 2 Enterprise Cloud Phase

The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer 3 (AVHRR/3) onboard MetOp-B/C is a cross track scanner that senses the Earth's radiation via six channels ranging from 0.58 to 12.5 microns. These channels cover the visible (VIS), near-infrared (NIR), shortwave-infrared (SWIR), medium-wave-infrared (MWIR), and thermal-infrared (TIR) spectral regions. AVHRR/3 provides day and night imaging of land, water and clouds, and measures sea surface temperature, ice, snow and vegetation cover. The MetOp-B/C AVHRR cloud phase product identifies the following cloud phase categories: warm liquid water phase, supercooled liquid water phase, mixed phase, and ice phase. Cloud phase data are generated from algorithms running within the Clouds from AVHRR Extended (CLAVR-x) processing system and is provided at three resolutions: FRAC (1 km), GHRR (4 km) and HRPT (1 km). The data are produced by the NOAA Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) and are distributed by the Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS) as 19 minute files in the netCDF-4 file format with attributes included.
