An N-way RF/microwave power divider/combiner utilizes one input and N outputs, or conversely N inputs and one output to divide (or combine) RF/microwave power while simultaneously and non-invasively measuring reflected power present due to mismatched loads or other failed components. The Gysel divider/combiner technique is used with the addition of N temperature measuring devices placed directly on the N isolation loads separated from the main divider/combiner lines. Because of high isolation between the N channels of the divider/combiner, the temperature above ambient of each isolation load is strongly correlated to the amount of power reflected back to an output port. The temperature is sensed external to the RF circuit whereby a measure of reflected power can be made without the use of invasive directional-coupler techniques. This is highly advantageous since directional-coupler techniques would increase the insertion-loss, cost, and complexity of the divider/combiner.

Signal processing is used to detect transient signals in the presence of noise. Two embodiments are disclosed. In both embodiments, the time series from a remote sensor is broken into a number of short time series. The power spectrum of each short time series are then calculated along with the mean noise level. The moments of each peak in every power spectrum are calculated and the peak with the largest power selected from each power spectrum. A histogram of the moments from these selected peaks is generated and normalized to become a measured PDF. In addition, a pre-determined PDF is derived, in the same method as above, from theoretically calculated noise, numerically simulated noise, or measured noise. Comparison between the measured and pre-determined PDF's establish the detection of a transient signal. The first embodiment compares the area between the measured and pre-determined PDF's against a threshold to determine detection. In a second embodiment, the differences between the measured and pre-determined PDF's are weighted and summed to form a score. This score is compared to a threshold to determine detection.

The Quarterly Services Survey (QSS) is the only source of service industry indicator performance providing timely estimates of revenue and expenses for selected service industries. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) is the primary Federal user of data collected in the QSS. The BEA utilizes this timely data to factor into the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to make improvements to the national accounts for service industries. QSS estimates also provide the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) and Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) with timely information on current economic performance. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) use the QSS data to develop hospital-spending estimates in the National Accounts.
