Essential Fish Habitat Maps for Alaska Fishery Management Plans from 1964-01-01 to 2017-01-01 (NCEI Accession 0287396)

Alaska Region National Marine Fisheries Service and the North Pacific Management Council describe and identify essential fish habitat (EFH) in fishery management plans (FMPs), minimize to the extent practicable the adverse effects of fishing and non-fishing activities on EFH, and identify other actions to encourage the conservation and enhancement of EFH, as required by the EFH provisions of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.

Federal regulations require fishery management councils review and revise EFH components every 5 years, and amend EFH provisions in the FMPs, as warranted, based on available information. NOAA Fisheries Alaska Essential Fish Habitat and Supplemental Habitat Datasets collection provides this accession with EFH descriptions and maps for managed species life history stages in Alaska FMPs. The EFH maps in this collection begin with the 2018 EFH 5-year Review and will be updated as subsequent 5-year Reviews are completed and new maps are available (i.e., 2023 EFH 5-year Review). Data are available as geodatabases (GDB) and shapefiles. They are arranged and accessible by FMP.

Arctic FMP: Survey distribution maps created through analysis of species distributions from surveys using various gear types from 2004-2017 for species in the Arctic Fishery Management Plan.

Bering Sea and Aleutian Island Crab FMP: Species distribution model maps created through analysis of NMFS bottom-trawl surveys and habitat covariates from 1982-2014 for crab species in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Crab Fishery Management Plan.

Bering Sea and Aleutian Island Groundfish FMP: Species distribution model maps created through analysis of NMFS bottom-trawl surveys and habitat covariates from 1982-2014 for groundfish species in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Groundfish Fishery Management Plan.

Gulf of Alaska Groundfish FMP: Species distribution model maps created through analysis of NMFS bottom-trawl surveys and habitat covariates from 1993-2014 for groundfish species in the Gulf of Alaska Groundfish Fishery Management Plan.

Salmon FMP: Cumulative frequency distribution model maps created through analysis of surveys using surface trawls, purse seines, and environmental variables from 1964 to 2009 for salmon species in the Fishery Management Plan for Pacific Salmon in the Exclusive Economic Zone off Alaska.

Scallop FMP: Survey distribution maps created through analysis of species distributions from surveys using various gear types from 1998-2010 for scallop species in the Scallop Fishery Management Plan, including areas of the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and Gulf of Alaska.
