This Level-2 (L2) Environmental Data Record (EDR) provides cloud cover layers detected with VIIRS I-band (750 m) channels onboard the Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20 satellites. The Cloud Cover Layer (CCL) retrieval algorithm derives cloud fraction, including supercooled and convective clouds, at a predefined spatial resolution and between specified atmospheric levels. It also retrieves total cloud fraction from surface to top of the atmosphere at the same resolution. CCL information is primarily derived from VIIRS cloud mask and cloud top products. The CCL products provide 6 cloud fractions, including total fraction and 5 cloud layer fractions at predefined flight levels (SFC-FL050, FL050-FL100, FL100-FL180, FL180-FL240, and FL240TOA). The horizontal resolutions for these fractions are 10km for full disk and CONUS, and 4km for mesoscale. This data set is produced by the NOAA Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) and is distributed by the Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS) as aggregated 10 minute TAR files consisting of 7 (86 second) granules in the NetCDF file format with metadata attributes included.
