This dataset contains a high quality operational Environmental Data Record (EDR) from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument onboard the Suomi-NPP satellite and is produced by the NOAA Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). IST is the temperature at the ice surface including snow and melt water on the ice. The VIIRS IST EDR provides surface temperatures retrieved at 750 meter spatial resolution for snow/ice covered oceans for both day and night. The IST algorithm uses two VIIRS Infrared bands, 11 micron (M15) and 12 micron (M16) and is based on the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) legacy IST algorithm. By default, IDPS VIIRS IST data obtained from Comprehensive Large-Array Stewardship System (CLASS) are distributed in four 86-second granules in Hierarchical Data Format v.5 (HDF5) with metadata attributes included.
