NOAA JPSS Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Annual Surface Type (AST) Environmental Data Record (EDR) from STAR

This Level-3 (L3) Global Environmental Data Record (EDR) provides annual surface type maps and climatology surface type maps generated from observations detected with the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard the Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20 satellites. The AST product is produced using a 17-Type surface classification scheme developed by the International Geosphere Biosphere Program (IGBP) from VIIRS Level-2 (L2) M-bands EDRs. This product is updated annually and is provided in both geographic and sinusoidal projections. Beginning in 2018, an additional 20-Type AST map was created in a geographic projection, which includes the 17 IGBP surface types, plus 3 additional surface types for classifying Tundra. The climatology product provides a yearly aggregated surface type map extending from 2012 to the present. This map is updated annually, uses a 20-Type classification scheme, and is provided in a geographic projection. The data are produced by the Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) and are distributed by the National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI) as global 1 km grids in the NetCDF-4 file format with metadata attributes included.
