The following dataset was collected as part of a project assessing the abilities of two oyster reef substrates to recruit and sustain oyster populations and mitigate erosion of landward salt marsh. Data were collected on Carrot Island in the Rachel Carson National Estuarine Research Reserve in Beaufort, North Carolina, where experimental reefs and control sites were sited on one low- and one high-energy marsh shoreline. The dataset includes metrics reflecting marsh performance (Spartina alterniflora shoot density, marsh shoreline change, marsh elevation) and oyster performance (oyster densities, oyster lengths, reef area, reef height). Additional shapefiles pertaining to AMBUR analysis of shoreline change and the position of the marsh shorelines in 2018 and 2020 are supplied. The data are supplied as xlsx, docx files and shapefiles. These data are meant to accompany the journal article “Reef design and site hydrodynamics mediate oyster restoration and marsh stabilization outcomes” (Wellman et al. 2021, Ecological Applications).
