The collection and maintenance of captive marine mammal information is mandated under Section 104 of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (16 U.S.C. 1374) (MMPA). Consistent with this mandate, the NMFS, Office of Protected Resources, administers an inventory of all permanently captive marine mammals (under NMFS' jurisdiction - cetaceans and pinnipeds, except for walrus). This inventory is in the process of being converted from an antiquated DOS-based system to a new internet accessible interface called the National Inventory of Marine Mammals (NIMM).
