EK60 Water Column Sonar Data Collected During RL1807
Data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
2018 Summer California Current Ecosystem CPS Survey (RL1807, EK80). In the California Current Ecosystem (CCE), multiple coastal pelagic fish species (CPS), including Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax), Northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax), jack mackerel (Trachurus symmetricus), Pacific mackerel (Scomber japonicus), and Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii), comprise the bulk of the forage fish assemblage.

EK60 Water Column Sonar Data Collected During RL1810

Since 1991, the Marine Mammal and Turtle Division (MMTD), previously the Protected Resources Division (PRD), has conducted large-vessel cetacean and ecosystem assessment surveys in waters off the U.S. West Coast. These line-transect surveys, conducted aboard NOAA research vessels (David Starr Jordan, McArthur, McArthur II, Reuben Lasker, Bell M. Shimada), typically occur in summer and fall and span waters out 300 nautical miles offshore, from the US-Canada to US-Mexico border, but sometimes include waters in Canada or Mexico as well.

EK60 Water Column Sonar Data Collected During RL1904
Data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
The California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) are a unique partnership of the California Department of Fish and Game, the NOAA Fisheries Service and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The organization was formed in 1949 to study the ecological aspects of the collapse of the sardine populations off California. Today its focus has shifted to the study of the marine environment off the coast of California and the management of its living resources.

The survey domain was defined by the modeled distribution of potential habitat for the northern subpopulation (stock) of Pacific Sardine (Zwolinski et al., 2011), and information recently gathered from other research projects [e.g., California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) samples] or fishing industry reports (e.g., catch and bycatch data). This area encompassed the anticipated distributions of the northern stock of Pacific Sardine and the central and northern stocks of Northern Anchovy off the west coasts of the U.S.
