UK Royal Navy WWII Logbooks

In 2006, the UK and NOAA's Climate Database Modernization Program (CDMP) funded the imaging of approximately 8,000 Royal Navy logbooks in the UK National Archives from the period around World War II (1937-47). By March 2006, the 267,874 resulting page images were shipped to CDMP for archival and later digitization and blending into the ICOADS dataset.

US Fish Commission Logbooks

Deck logs for nine fisheries research vessels held in microfilm and book format at National Archives facilities in Washington DC and Silver Spring MD. They document temperature, pressure, and weather conditions in a standardized format. Period of record 1877-1925. Scanned through a partnership between NCDC's Climate Database Modernization Program and the National Marine Fisheries Service. In the index field, SI stands for Smithsonian Institution. The three columns in which SI appears document the location of the paper records.

US Marine Meteorological Journals

This series consists of volumes entitled 'Meteorological Journal' (a regulation Navy-issue publication) which were to be completed by masters of merchant vessels during their voyages. Period of record 1878-1894, peak 1885-1886. Continuing the pioneering work undertaken by Lt. Matthew Fontaine Maury, United States Navy, the U.S. Navy's Hydrographic Office endeavored to enlist the help of commercial vessels in compiling data regarding meteorological conditions at sea.

'Storm Data and Unusual Weather Phenomena' is a monthly publication containing a chronological listing, by state, of hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, hail, floods, drought conditions, lightning, high winds, snow, temperature extremes and other weather phenomena. The reports are provided by the National Weather Service and contain statistics on personal injuries and damage estimates. Storm Data is a publication of the National Climatic Data Center.

Some stations provide daily snowfall, snow depth, evaporation, and soil temperature data. The annual issue contains monthly and annual averages of temperature, precipitation amounts, temperature extremes, freeze data, soil temperatures, evaporation, and a recap of monthly cooling degree days.

Climate Record Books

Climate Record Books contain daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual averages, extremes, or occurrences. Most data are sequential by period of record 1871-1910, 1911-1930, 1931-1950, 1951-1970, and 1971-1990. Climatological Record Books are prepared and maintained by National Weather Service stations and offices. These books present detailed climatological data for an individual station, or office, for a long period of years. Data are arranged by element by years. The first volume, 1871-1910, was prepared for 202 stations although not all stations had the full period of record.
