Assessment of Nonindigenous Species on Coral Reefs in the Hawaiian Islands, with Emphasis on Introduced Invertebrates, November 2, 2002 - November 5, 2003 (NCEI Accession 0001419)

Coral reefs on the islands of Kauai, Molokai, Maui, Hawaii and Oahu were surveyed for the presence and impact of marine nonindigenous and cryptogenic species (NIS) using a rapid assessment method that standardized search effort for approximately 312 m2 at each site. A total of 41 sites were surveyed by three investigators for a total of approximately 120 hours search time on the five islands. Algae, invertebrate, and fish taxa were identified on site or returned to laboratory for identity confirmation.

Hyperspectroradiometer data from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Rapid Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program of 2001 in support of the Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative (NCEI Accession 0001446)

The hyperspectral surveys were conducted using a hyperspectral radiometer encased in a custom-made underwater housing. The NOWRAMP expedition represents the first time an un-tethered underwater spectroradiometer was used in coral reef ecosystems. From the readings, one derives substrate reflectance, which can be directly compared to remotely sensed images. Readings were collected from the most common substrates including corals, algae, sand, rubble and pavement. Several hundred spectral readings were collected during the 2001 NWHI field campaigns.

Groundtruthing notes and biological data from coral ecosystems surveys for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Rapid Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program, 2000 - 2002 (NCEI Accession 0001448)

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (NOWRAMP) began in 2000 with the mission to rapidly evaluate and map the shallow water reef habitats in the NWHI. Utilizing two research vessels Rapture and NOAA Ship Townsend Cromwell, researchers spent 30 days at sea visiting each of the ten major islands, atolls and reefs in the remote region of the Hawaiian archipelago. This dataset is a small subset from these cruises. It includes spreadsheet data files on habitats, coral cores, coral species, substrate types, and substrate type percent bottom cover.

This dataset includes CTD and Bottle data, from mostly French platforms, and provided by IFREMER, including 31 CTD data files with 1537 stations from 1987 to 2003, 31 Bottle data files with 1467 stations from 1990 to 2002, and 37 Historical Bottle data files with 1300 stations from 1964 to 1973. All data files are in the MEDATLAS format.
The historical files were digitized in 2003 by IFREMER from the original paper data.
