The state of Washington routinely experiences seasonal restrictions on commercial and recreational shellfish harvest due to two toxic phytoplankton syndromes, Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) and Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP), which is often referred to as Domoic Acid Poisoning (DAP). The biotoxin that causes PSP temporarily interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses in warm-blooded animals, causing symptoms in humans such as, numbness and tingling of the lips, tongue, face and extremities, difficulty talking, breathing, swallowing and muscle incoordinations.

Ocean Margin EXchange (OMEX) II aims at studying, measuring and modeling the processes and fluxes occurring along and across the European shelf break facing the North Atlantic Ocean. It serves as the basis for the development of predictive models of the global environmental change. The second phase of OMEX II concentrates on the upwelling region of the narrow Iberian margin. Findings are divided into 5 work packages. Work package I, temporal evolution of surface production and fate of organic matter.

This dataset includes plankton taxa and counts, gear type, tow type, net mouth diameter and mesh size. The data were collected from 1928 through 1987 from numerous vessels worldwide. The data were compiled by the Smithsonian Oceanographic Sorting Center (SOSC) and submitted to NODC in 1994.
