Current, wind, and temperature data were collected in the Florida Keys passages from FIXED PLATFORMS using meters for direct observations. Data were collected by the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) from 01 February 1984 to 31 July 2001. Transport through the channels is influenced by the tides and winds. Seasonal variations in currents reflect the changing weather patterns in the region. Heat flux measurements were conducted at selected locations.

In the later part of 1999, a relational Microsoft Access database was created to accommodate a wide range of data on the phytoplankton Karenia brevis. This database, termed HAB Historical Database (HHD), was designed to efficiently capture core information, yet have the capacity to expand and capture related sampling information if it is available. The state of Washington routinely experiences seasonal restrictions on commercial and recreational shellfish harvest due to two toxic phytoplankton syndromes, Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) and Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP), which is often referred to as Domoic Acid Poisoning (DAP). The biotoxin that causes PSP temporarily interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses in warm-blooded animals, causing symptoms in humans such as, numbness and tingling of the lips, tongue, face and extremities, difficulty talking, breathing, swallowing and muscle incoordinations.
