Animal-borne video logger observations, depth records, and krill length data from chinstrap penguins in the Southern Ocean from 2019-12-20 to 2020-01-31 (NCEI Accession 0239297)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This data set contains raw, annotated, and synthesized data used in the analysis by Hinke et al. (2021) titled "Serendipitous observations from animal-borne video loggers reveal synchronous diving and equivalent prey capture rates in chinstrap penguins" (https://doi.org/10.1007/s00227-021-03937-5). The data derive from field work to monitor the diving and predation behaviors of two chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarcticus) from Cape Shirreff, Livingston Island (60.79 W, 62.46 S) in Antarctica.

Sea surface temperature, salinity, and other presence or absence data for epipelagic tows collected during R/V Pelican cruise PE18-01 (LF2017A) in the northern Gulf of Mexico from 2017-07-01 to 2017-07-04 (NCEI Accession 0239305)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This dataset reports presence or absence data and other environmental cruise data collected in the Gulf of Mexico during R/V Pelican cruise PE18-01 (LF2017A) from 2017-07-01 to 2017-07-04. Larvae were collected with paired 61-cm bongo nets with 333 and 500-micron mesh. General Oceanics Flowmeters (Model 2030R, Miami, FL), were placed within net frames to determine the surface area sampled by each net. Fish larvae and early juveniles collected with net gear were preserved onboard in 95% ethanol.

2018 Flower Garden Banks-Stetson Bank Long-Term Monitoring of the Reef Crest and Mesophotic Benthic and Fish Communities (NCEI Accession 0239376)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This dataset contains raw and processed data from an annual long-term monitoring study that documents the benthic and fish community changes at Stetson Bank, in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. Stetson Bank is an uplifted claystone/siltstone feature, located 75 nautical miles from Galveston, TX in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, that supports a well-developed benthic community of scleractinian coral and tropical marine sponges.

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values in sequential segments of vibrissae of unrelated northern fur seal pups and adult females at San Miguel Island, California collected during September 2012 (NCEI Accession 0239459)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

We analyzed sequential δ13C and δ15N values along single whiskers sampled from unrelated northern fur seal pups and post-parturient females at San Miguel Island, California. The longest dorsal mystacial vibrissa was plucked from five adult females (4-18 years old) and five pups (~3 months old) during September 2012. Standard length (cm), weight (kg), age, and sex were measured/determined for each individual. We divided each vibrissa into 1 mm segments starting at the proximal end and progressing longitudinally toward the distal end.

Measurements of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in muscle tissue of several fish species and liver anomalies in red snapper collected aboard multiple cruises in the southern Gulf of Mexico from 2010-06-05 to 2016-08-19 (NCEI Accession 0239471)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This data package contains measurements of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in muscle tissue of several fish species including Red Snapper and Yellowedge Grouper collected aboard R/V Justo Sierra and R/V Weatherbird II cruises in the southern Gulf of Mexico from 2010-06-05 to 2016-08-19. Fish species were caught in Campeche Bay and Yucatan Shelf in the Southwestern Gulf of Mexico using demersal longline sampling gear.

Water temperature collected at multiple depths from a mooring in Lake Superior, Great Lakes region from 2020-08-12 to 2021-05-21 (NCEI Accession 0239472)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Vertical water temperature observational data for one location in the central basin of Lake Superior from August 2020 through May 2021. This mooring was located approximately 46 miles north of Rock River, Michigan. Vertical water temperature observations were collected at 23 depths, the maximum depth of this mooring location was 202 m. The temperature measurements were collected continuously during this time period with an accuracy of ±0.002 °C. Note, there are two files for the 2020-2021 observations, including 1 hour and 10 minute time intervals.

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The following dataset was collected as part of a project assessing the abilities of two oyster reef substrates to recruit and sustain oyster populations and mitigate erosion of landward salt marsh. Data were collected on Carrot Island in the Rachel Carson National Estuarine Research Reserve in Beaufort, North Carolina, where experimental reefs and control sites were sited on one low- and one high-energy marsh shoreline.
