The study design for the in-situ measurements consisted of an array of nine full-depth (or tall) moorings, six near-bottom moorings, and 25 Pressure Inverted Echo Sounders (PIES) deployed in U.S. waters. The overarching goal of this study is to increase knowledge of the dynamics of the Loop Current in the eastern Gulf of Mexico through a combined analysis of observations and numerical modeling output.

Coral bleaching data from Bleachwatch in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary from 2014-05-30 to 2014-11-11 (NCEI Accession 0126654)

The initial onset of mass coral bleaching can vary among different species, geographic locations, types of reef zones and a fluctuation of severity, which makes it very difficult to predict where or when it will occur. The Florida Keys BleachWatch Program, modeled after Great Barrier Reef’s BleachWatch, is a team of trained recreational, commercial and scientific divers who help monitor and report on conditions at the reefs. After each visit to the reef, the divers complete a data form, either printed or online, and send it to the BleachWatch coordinator.

From 1872 to 1876, the HMS Challenger sailed around the world studying ocean features such as ocean temperature and chemistry, wildlife, and sounding the ocean, discovering undersea features like seamounts and ocean trenches. This expedition marked the beginning of the modern study of oceanography.

Equipment requested from USF: 8-barrel multicore and core-processing equipment (Hollander), USBL system (Locker), chest freezer. Equipment provided by FSU: MILET photo platform.
