This dataset contains oceanographic data collected in the US EEZ surrounding Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Operations explored largely uncharted deep-sea ecosystems and seafloor, and investigated unknown and poorly known areas, including the Puerto Rico Trench, Muertos Trough, Mona Passage, and the Virgin Islands Trough. This leg featured some of the deepest remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives ever conducted in the region and collected critical deep-water environmental data that will improve ecosystem understanding and inform federal and local resource managers.

Effects of ocean acidification on fishery yields and profits of red king crab in Bristol Bay from model studies (NCEI Accession 0127395)

This dataset contains model output data that were collected to examine the impact of ocean acidification on fishery yields and profits of red king crab in Bristol Bay. A stage-structured pre-recruit model was developed to capture hypotheses regarding the impact of ocean acidification on the survival of pre-recruit crab. The model was parameterized using life history and survival data for red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) derived from experiments conducted at the National Marine Fisheries Service Kodiak laboratory.

These unprojected (geographic coordinates) 3-Zone Average Annual Salinity Digital Geographies are based on analysis of long-term salinity data for 147 estuaries of the contiguous United States. Each estuary is subdivided into three zones between the head(s) of tide, and the seaward boundaries based on annual-averaged and depth-averaged salinities. The salinities used to define the three zones are: (1) Tidal Fresh Zone (0 to 0.5 parts per thousand); (2) Mixing Zone (0.5 to 25 parts per thousand); (3) Seawater Zone (25 parts per thousand or greater).

Data presented here are subset of a larger plankton imagery data set collected in the subtropical Straits of Florida from 2014-05-28 to 2014-06-14. Imagery data were collected using the In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System (ISIIS-2) as part of a NSF-funded project to assess the biophysical drivers affecting fine-scale interactions between larval fish, their prey, and predators. This subset of images was used in the inaugural National Data Science Bowl (www.datasciencebowl.com) hosted by Kaggle and sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton.

This dataset contains nutrient concentrations, temperature, salinity, density and dissolved oxygen values measured by CTD profiles on the U.S. Northeast Continental Shelf in support of ocean acidification research. Nutrients were measured in the laboratory using water samples collected during the CTD profiles at discrete depths. Ocean acidification is associated with increased concentrations of carbon dioxide that forms carbonic acid when dissolved in water. Marine primary production plays an important part in the carbon cycle by converting inorganic forms of carbon into organic matter.

To better understand the functional roles of parrotfishes on Caribbean coral reefs we documented abundance, habitat preferences, and diets of nine species of parrotfishes (Scarus coelestinus, Scarus coeruleus, Scarus guacamaia, Scarus taeniopterus, Scarus vetula, Sparisoma aurofrenatum, Sparisoma chrysopterum, Sparisoma rubripinne, Sparisoma viride) on three high-relief spur-and-groove reefs (Molasses, Carysfort, and Elbow) offshore of Key Largo in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

The National Park Service's Southeast Alaska Network (SEAN) oceanography program's 22 stations span the length of Glacier Bay proper, from just outside the mouth of the Bay to the heads of both the East and West Arms. Generally mid-channel and equidistant, stations capture a range of depths from shallow sills to deep basins, and are located along the gradient from tidewater glaciers and turbid outwash streams to source waters at Icy Strait.

This dataset includes the results from a laboratory experiment assessing whether juvenile Florida Pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) foraging success is greater when in groups of multiple fish or when feeding alone. Florida Pompano were given coquina clams (Donax sp.) as a prey source, a main component of their natural diet in the north-central Gulf of Mexico. These data accompany the following peer-reviewed publication title: Facilitation and dominance in a schooling predator: foraging behavior of Florida Pompano, Trachinotus carolinus.

This project was funded for two years by CRCP (FY13-14) and built upon one year of pilot work conducted in FY12 funded by NMFS-SEFSC and SERO as an NRC postdoctoral research fellowship (Huntington). The goals of the project were to characterize natural, robust Acropora cervicornis populations in different regions, including various aspects of A.cervicornis condition, function (growth and tissue condition), and resident fish assemblages.
