Seaglider is a buoyancy driven autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) developed by scientists and engineers at the University of Washington's School of Oceanography and Applied Physics Laboratory. Seagliders are designed to glide from the ocean surface to a programmed depth and back while measuring temperature, salinity, depth-averaged current, and other quantities along a sawtooth trajectory through the water. Seaglider has entered wide use in scientific deployments. They are designed for missions in range of several thousand kilometers and durations of many months.

Northwest Atlantic Regional Climatology (NCEI Accession 0155889)

To provide an improved oceanographic foundation and reference for multi-disciplinary studies of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean, NCEI Regional Climatology Team developed a new set of high-resolution quality-controlled long-term annual, seasonal and monthly mean temperature and salinity fields on different depth levels. This new regional climatology is based on the World Ocean Database archive of temperature and salinity from observations spanning over more than a hundred years and incorporates a great deal of new data not previously available.

XBT data were collected during a Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center's Cetacean Research Program's shipboard cetacean survey (Cruise ID OES 07-02). A total of 6 XBT casts were conducted. All casts were at Ladd Seamount in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Sippican T-6 and T-7 XBTs were used and have terminal depths of 460 m and 760 m respectively.

XBT casts were conducted at cetacean sighting locations where d-tags were deployed, between CTD cast locations (7/29) and opportunistically throughout the cruise. Lockheed Martin Sippican T-7 and Fast Deep XBTs were used. Terminal depths were 760 m and 1000 m respectively.

XBT data were collected during a Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center's Cetacean Research Program's shipboard cetacean survey (Cruise ID: SE 10-08). XBT casts were conducted four times each day (morning, midday, afternoon, evening) along the survey tracklines within the Hawaii EEZ. If a CTD cast could not be conducted because of wind and swell conditions an XBT cast was conducted instead. Lockheed Martin Sippican Deep Blue XBTs were used (terminal depths were 760 m).

This dataset contains oceanographic data collected in the waters around Santa Rita, Guam and Saipan. Operations used the ship’s deep water mapping systems, NOAA’s two-body 6000 m remotely operated vehicle, and the ship’s high-bandwidth satellite connection for real-time ship to shore communications. Daytime ROV dives were conducted and included high-resolution visual surveys and limited rock and biologic specimen sampling, as well as CTD casts to collect more environmental information at sites of interest.
