The Predictions of AcousticS with Smart Experimental Networks of GlidERS (PASSENGERS) project is a partnership between universities and the Naval Research Laboratory to improve the capability of data-assimilative ocean models to predict acoustic propagation in dynamic oceanography environments. It includes the deployment of teams of gliders in small (10 km) spatial footprints with integrated passive acoustics focused on mapping the physical and acoustic environment in the dynamic region of the Atlantis II Seamounts.

The Challenger Glider Mission is a re-creation of the first global scientific ocean survey conducted by the HMS Challenger from 1872-1876. The goals of the mission are to establish a collaborative international network of autonomous underwater glider ports, to assess global ocean model predictive skill while contributing real-time profile data for assimilation in ocean forecast models by operational centers worldwide, and to crowd source student-based ocean research and discovery.

Sea Water Ocean Topography (SWOT) is a radar interferometry mission making SSH measurements over a swath 120 km wide. There is a nadir gap of 20 km where the error from interferometry is not meeting science requirement. The mission's calval requirement is to validate the along-track SSH performance in terms of a wavenumber spectrum of the measurement error by comparison to in-situ measurement. The current candidate for the in-situ measurement is an array of gliders along the center of a swath to resolve the dynamic height at wavelengths of 15-150 km.

These glider deployments are part of a multi-institution collaborative effort carried out to study the processes in the western Caribbean Sea and Yucatan Straits, which influence the Loop Current variability and Loop Current Eddy detachment.

This project is conducting a seasonal baseline survey with a pair of gliders (this glider and RU41) deployed in each season over two years with a full complement of available sensors to simultaneously map oceanographic and ecological variables.
