This glider was deployed as a replacement for ng656-20220803T0000, which malfunctioned. This glider was deployed Southwest of the Mississippi Canyon in the Gulf of Mexico. The glider will traverse a series of 3 waypoints forming a triangle in the central Gulf of Mexico. LBS gliders collect temperature and salinity profiles in the water column.

This collaborative project is focused on collecting temperature and salinity profiles in the waters in the vicinity of the US Virgin Islands to investigate the oceans role in modulating hurricane intensity in the region. Specifically, glider data will be utilized to both validate and improve operational coupled ocean and atmosphere hurricane models. The 5 Naval Oceanographic gliders deployed in the US Virgin Islands were part of a larger network that included an additional 5 in the vicinity of Puerto Rico.
