This data package includes datasets and benthic imagery that support the development of a semi-automated coral bleaching classifier in CoralNet. The datasets in this package include annotations of imagery produced to test and train the CoralNet Bleaching Classifier, the annotation label set used in CoralNet, and site-level metadata for annotated imagery. The datasets were generated by scientists of the Ecosystem Sciences Division (ESD) at the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) at NOAA, funded by the Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP).

Data provided in this dataset are benthic habitat imagery that result from benthic photo-quadrat surveys conducted along transects at stratified random sites surveyed across the Main Hawaiian Islands during the 2019 bleaching event. This dataset contains oceanographic data collected from NOAA Ship OKEANOS EXPLORER from 2022-10-16 to 2022-11-03. Data acquisition from shipboard sensors includes navigational data, meteorological data (altimetry, conductivity, depth, dew point, fluorescence, oxygen, pressure, relative humidity, relative wind speed, salinity, sound speed, sound velocity, temperature, true wind, turbidity, water temperature, wind, wind direction, wind speed), vehicle data (ROV time to surface, traction winch data, line rate data), and Profile Data (ASVP and XBT).

This data package contains 1x1 degree coastal climatologies (mean fields of oceanographic variables on a regular geographic grid at specific depths) of pH on the Total Scale, total hydrogen ion content, free hydrogen ion content, carbonate ion content, aragonite saturation state, calcite saturation state, total dissolved inorganic carbon content, and total alkalinity content from surface to 500 meters water depth on North American ocean margins.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists from the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) and Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML), working with scientists from the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) in St. Thomas conducted a multi-year interdisciplinary research project using the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster to conduct biological and physical oceanographic surveys of the Virgin Islands’ (VI) bank ecosystems and surrounding regional waters.

This data package includes benthic cover data of Aua Reef, American Samoa, produced from the analysis of benthic imagery performed by the Ecosystem Sciences Division (ESD) of the Pacific Island Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC), and funded by the Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP). Benthic imagery was collected at 18 randomly-selected sites during coral demographic surveys by the NOAA ESD during the 2022 fly-in mission to American Samoa (MP2206). After processing and sorting site photos, imagery was qualitatively analyzed using the web-based CoralNet image annotation tool.
