Species ID Project

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Up to 10 individuals of a fin fish, shark, and crustacean species are collected and morphologically identified by Southeast Fisheries Science Center. Water-soluble sarcoplasmic proteins are extracted from the tissue; proteins are analyzed by microfluidic electrophoresis (Agilent Bioanalyzer 2100) to generate species-specific protein patterns. The protein patterns are entered into a database to determine which are the most abundant for each species.

Northern fur seal foraging strategies, Bogoslof and St. Paul Islands 2004-2006

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

These data are part of North Pacific Research Board Project 414 and Project 514. Project 514 provided a second year of data collection to the study detailed in Banks et al. (2006; North Pacific Research Board Project 414 Final Report; https://workspace.aoos.org/published/file/48ffae91-0274-4b2b-bc84-53785…), and are summarized together in Springer et al.

AFSC/NMML/CCEP: Survival Rate of California sea lions at San Miguel Island, California from 1987-2009

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The dataset contains initial capture and marking data for California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) pups at San Miguel Island, California and subsequent resighting of the marked animals throughout the time series. The data are used in mark-recapture analysis to estimate survival rates.

HMSRP Hawaiian Monk Seal Contaminants (Blubber, serum, and whole blood persistent organic pollutants) Data

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This data set contains information on persistent organic pollutant analysis of Hawaiian monk seal whole blood and blubber samples from the northwestern Hawaiian islands (samples collected 1998-2001) and serum and blubber samples from the main Hawaiian islands (samples collected 2000-2010). Samples were collected from both live animals during handling for other purposes (health assessment or telemetry device application) and dead animals through necropsy. Data is available in excel spreadsheets.

HMSRP Hawaiian Monk Seal Blood Values (Establishing hematology and serum chemistry reference ranges for wild Hawaiian Monk Seals)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Hematology and serum chemistry evaluations are essential to a patients comprehensive health exam by providing measures of organ function, blood cell volume and health status. Reference ranges have to be established to interpret that the values are within normal limits. Presently, hematology and serum chemistry results from healthy, sick and injured Hawaiian monk seals are interpreted using past studies, which were limited by small samples sizes across age classes, collected from captive Hawaiian monk seals or established using frozen samples.

Alaska Northern Fur Seal Foraging Habitat Model Stable Isotope Data, 2006-2008

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

These data sets were used by Zeppelin et al. (2015) to model northern fur seal foraging habitats based on stable isotope values measured in plasma and red blood cells, and satellite-linked tag measures of locations and diving behavior. Foraging habitat models were developed using blood isotope samples collected from 35 adult female fur seals on three breeding colonies in Alaska during July-October 2006. Satellite location and dive data were used to define habitat use in terms of the proportion of time spent or dives made in different oceanographic/bathymetric domains.

Fishery Dependent Pelagic Longline Temperature Depth/Data

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts research and develops gear modifications to mitigate bycatch in fisheries. The data set includes data from three pelagic longline bycatch mitigation research projects, including the Grand Banks sea turtle mitigation research (2002-2003), Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Cooperative Research Project (CRP, 2005), and Gulf of Mexico bluefin tuna mitigation research (2008-2012). These data were collected in conjunction with the SEFSC Pelagic Observer Program (POP) to augment the existing POP data.
