Bottom Water Quality

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Bottom water quality is monitored only at the Gooses Reef buoy using a YSI6600. The data is transmitted real-time using acoustic modems hourly. The YSI records bottom water temperature, conductivity/salinity, pressure/depth, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, turbidity and pH and sits at about 35 ft depth.

Shark and Red Snapper Bottom Longline Survey

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. A shark/snapper/grouper bottom longline survey is conducted every year from July through September. The survey covers waters between 5-200 fm from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina to West Palm Beach, FL, and the U.S. northern Gulf of Mexico from southwest Florida to Brownsville, TX.

Experimental Bottom Longline Survey (2015)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. In 2015, an experimental longline survey was conducted to provide additional sampling opportunities outside the annual bottom longline survey time frame and standard protocols, including testing the effects of variable bait type, leader material and covering a larger depth range.

Congressional Supplemental Longline Survey (2011)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. In 2010, Congress appropriated supplemental funding to expand these surveys in the Gulf of Mexico in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Bottom longline stations were conducted throughout the northern Gulf of Mexico during 2011.

Cuban/Mexico Collaborative Bottom Longline Survey

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. Bottom longline gear was set at locations in Mexican and Cuban waters. The objective of the study was to assess the distribution and abundance of coastal and pelagic sharks. Ancillary objectives included collecting biological and environmental data and tagging.

Atlantic Oculina Survey (2004)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys off the east coast of the United States to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. A pilot pelagic longline survey was conducted in 2004 off the east coast of the United States. The objective of the survey was to examine the feasibility of using pelagic longline gear to collect fisheries-independent data on stocks of offshore fishes and to establish protocols for future use.

Pelagic Longline Survey (2005)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys in the Gulf of Mexico to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. A pilot pelagic longline survey was conducted in 2005 in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The objective of the survey was to examine the feasibility of using pelagic longline gear to collect fisheries independent data on stocks of offshore fishes and to establish protocols for future use of data.

South Atlantic Pelagic Longline Survey (2006)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys off the east coast of the United States to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. A pilot pelagic longline survey was conducted in 2006 off the U.S. east coast. The objective of the survey was to examine the feasibility of using pelagic longline gear to collect fisheries independent data on stocks of offshore fishes and to establish protocols for future use of data.

SEAMAP Reef Fish Survey (1992 - 1997; and 2001 - 2015)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. The reef fish survey is conducted primarily on the outer continental shelf of the Gulf of Mexico along topographic features (e.g. reefs, banks and ledges) between Brownsville, TX to the Dry Tortugas, FL.

Deepwater Snapper-Grouper Marine Protected Area Survey (1982 - 1983)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. In 1982 to 1983, surveys were conducted to locate one or more Marine Protected Areas along the west Florida shelf to protect spawning aggregations of gag grouper.
