Multiple stressor effects of ocean acidification and hypoxia on behavior, physiology, and gene expression of temperate reef fishes

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Trinidad Head Line (THL) is a transect of stations extending due west from Trinidad Head (41° 3.5¿ N) The THL was initially established in late 2006 to provide ship-based observations of hydrographic structure and the planktonic ecosystem in coastal waters off northern California. Since 2008, sampling has been conducted approximately monthly. Sampling is conducted at up to six stations along the transect, three of which are over the shelf and three over the upper slope.

Cost Earnings Data 2012 - Hawaii Longline

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The data collection project assessed the economic performance of Hawaii-based longline vessels that made trips in 2012. Operational and vessel costs were collected by personal interviews with vessel owners, captains, and crew. Revenue information was generated from the Hawaii Department of Aquatic Resources dealer reports and NMFS logbooks (landings and fishing efforts). The project estimated the cost-earnings for each individual longline vessels.

Atlantic menhaden adult tagging study

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Atlantic menhaden are a schooling forage fish species, which are subject to a large commercial purse seine fishery. Atlantic menhaden are harvested for reduction into fish oil and fish meal products. Historically, the Atlantic menhaden fishery was one of the largest by volume in the United States. Thus, scientists and managers wanted a better understanding of Atlantic menhaden life history including movements on an annual basis. As a consequence, an adult tagging study was conducted from 1966-1971.

Water Column Profile Data

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. Environmental profiles are acquired during all surveys and are averaged into one meter depth bins. The data are acquired with Sea-Bird SBE25 and SBE9 profilers equipped with water temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, beam transmittance, and fluorescence sensors.

Flynet Trouser Trawl Turtle Excluder Device Testing

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

In 1994, the National Marine Fisheries Service Northeast Fisheries Observer Program documented sea turtle bycatch in the Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) and weakfish (Cynoscion regalis) trawl fishery off North Carolina. The fishery utilized a high opening bottom trawl locally known as a “flynet.” In 1998, the NMFS Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories initiated research to develop a Turtle Excluder Device (TED) for the flynet fishery. Over the next 10 years, numerous prototype designs were trialed to determine feasibility of use in the fishery.

Fisheries Dependent Turtle Excluder Device Testing with Reduced Bar Spacing

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducted a study to determine if Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) with reduced bar spacing were effective at reducing unwanted bycatch while still retaining the target catch of penaeid shrimp. This study was conducted in the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico primarily in the inshore waters of Louisiana and Mississippi. This study was conducted by comparative towing tests aboard an inshore commercial shrimp trawler.
