This data contains sea turtle sightings reported to the NMFS Beaufort Laboratory sea turtle program by the general public as they were fishing, boating, etc. These sightings provide relative abundance and seasonal occurrence of sea turtles in North Carolina's inshore and offshore waters

Radio transmitters attached to sea turtles captured in various fishing gear enabled us to track and measure surfacing time of each turtle. Determining location of each turtle required detection and direction (bearing) of radio signals simultaneously by two or more receivers in the area. From these bearings, the animal's location is determined via triangulation. Furthermore, because radio signals only transmit in the air, duration of detected signals can be used to determine length of time turtles were spending on the surface of the water.

Little information has been produced since the mid 1970s about the roundscale spearfish Tetrapturus georgii (Lowe, 1840). The most complete species description was based on examination of four individuals from the eastern Atlantic. On the basis of detailed laboratory examination of 16 specimens, as well as fishery observer information and biological samples from an additional 49 individual specimens, we update morphological descriptions and key identification characteristics of this species for the western North Atlantic.

This data set contains catch and effort for fishing trips that are taken by vessels with a Federal permit issued for the swordfish and sharks under the Highly Migratory Species (HMS) fishery management plan. Fishermen that own vessels with permits in these fisheries are required to complete a vessel logbook for every trip in which any species in the Highly Migratory Species fishery management plans are caught and landed. Fishermen are not required to report fishing trips in which other than these species are caught.

The Marine Mammal and Turtle Division collects data about individual cetaceans and sea turtles that come ashore, strand on the beach, were incidentally killed in the yellowfin purse-seine fishery operating in the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) or in the California gillnet fisheries (CAGN). The data include the species, data and location, and the sex and size of each animal. Reproductive data are also collected from some animals.

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. The reef fish survey of Madison-Swanson and Steamboat Lumps MPA is conducted primarily on the along topographic features (e.g. reefs, banks and ledges) of the MPA.
