Egg quality sablefish - Determination and practical application of egg quality measures toward reliable culture of high-value marine finfish species

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

There is increasing global awareness of the need for sustainable aquaculture. Aquaculture represents a potential mechanism for supplementing wild fish harvests, either through stocking of cultured animals or farming to market size. In the first case, stocked animals would be available to sport and commercial fishermen. In the latter, consumer demand would be met directly with a farmed product, reducing pressure on wild stocks.

Feed formulations - Incorporation of Plant Proteins into Marine Finfish Feeds, a NWFSC-YSFRI Joint Study

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This international study is funded through the NOAA Fisheries Office of Science and Technology. The overall goal of the proposed research is to identify fishery by-product meals that will best facilitate the incorporation of soy and corn protein meals into marine fish feeds. It is well established that fish proteins are nutritious and valuable feed commodities. However, in many areas of the world, fish processors currently discard large quantities of fish protein as processing waste due to a lack of appropriate technologies to process these by-products.

Growth - Production of Macroalgae for Human Consumption in the Pacific Northwest

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This proposal will focus on the production of fresh macroalgae in a land-based system. This type of production system avoids the regulatory and permitting issues associated with water-based systems, allows precise control of the rearing environment, reduces harvesting and management costs, and reduces nutrient discharges. While macroalgae can enhance human health, specific information is needed to ensure that this product is wholesome and safe to consume.

Salish Sea Marine Survival (Steelhead) - Early Marine Survival of Puget Sound Steelhead

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The primary objectives of this study are to estimate a predation rate by harbor seals on steelhead smolt in Puget Sound, and determine whether predation by harbor seals differs by region. Nisqually River steelhead will be acoustic tagged, and 12 - 18 seals will be fitted with GPS/acoustic receiver instrument packs.

Social Behavior - Snake River sockeye salmon captive propagation

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

In the early 1990s, Redfish Lake sockeye salmon from the Sawtooth Basin in Idaho were on the brink of extinction, and they were listed as endangered under the US Endangered Species Act in 1991. To prevent extinction, a gene rescue captive broodstock program was established for the stock that consisted of taking most of the remaining gene pool into captive culture at specialized conservation hatcheries at the Manchester Research Station and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game Eagle Hatchery.
