Benthic Surveys in Vatia, American Samoa: benthic cover derived from analysis of benthic images collected during belt transect surveys of coral demography in 2015 and 2020

Jurisdictional managers have expressed concerns that nutrients from the village of Vatia, Tutuila, American Samoa, are having an adverse effect on the adjacent coral reef ecosystem. Excess nutrient loads promote increases in algal growth that can have deleterious effects on corals, such as benthic algae outcompeting and overgrowing corals. Nitrogen and phosphorus can also directly impact corals by lowering fertilization success, and reducing both photosynthesis and calcification rates.

Coral reef ecosystem marine protected area monitoring in Fagamalo, American Samoa: benthic percent cover derived from analysis of benthic images collected during belt transect surveys of coral demography in 2015

In 2010 the village of Fagamalo, Tutuila, American Samoa, designated a no-take Marine Protected Area that sees the protection of 2.25 square kilometers of ocean. Because little is known regarding the status of living marine communities in the area, and at the request of the American Samoa Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources, NOAA scientists conducted surveys to assess the status of the benthic communities and establish a baseline against which to compare temporal change.

Multi beam bathymetry and backscatter synthesis for the Main Hawaiian Islands (5 meter resolution)

The Hawaii deep-slope bottomfish fishery preferentially targets seven high value species (i.e. six snappers and one grouper, hereafter referred to as Deep7) and represents the major insular commercial fishery in the state. The NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) Stock Assessment Program (SAP) is responsible for regularly assessing this stock.

Scientists from the Midwater Assessment and Conservation Engineering (MACE) Program of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center's (AFSC) Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering (RACE) Division conducted an acoustic-trawl (AT) stock assessment survey of the Shumagin Islands and Sanak. The Shumagin Islands survey was conducted 12-15 Feb., beginning in Shumagin Trough, continuing through Stepovak Bay, Renshaw, Unga Strait, Korovin Strait and ending in West Nagai Strait. The Sanak Trough area survey was conducted 15-16 Feb., followed by the survey of Morzhovoi Bay on 16 Feb.

AFSC/RACE/MACE: Results of 2015 acoustic trawl survey Shumagin/Sanak/PWS DY1502

The surveys primary objective was to collect acoustic data and trawl information to estimate midwater abundance and distribution of walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) Shumagins Region during late winter and early spring. Acoustic data were collected using five split-beam transducers (18, 38, 70, 120, and 200 kHz) and Simrad ER60 scientific echo sounders. Midwater and near-bottom acoustic backscatter was sampled using an Aleutian Wing 30/26 Trawl (AWT) and a poly Noreastern bottom trawl (PNE) with roller gear.

Scientists from the Midwater Assessment and Conservation Engineering (MACE) Program of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering (RACE) Division conducted an acoustic-trawl (AT) stock assessment survey of portions of the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) shelf to estimate the distribution and abundance of walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) during summer of 2013. The survey (cruise DY2013-07) was conducted between 8 June and 9 August on the Gulf of Alaska shelf from 50-1,000 m depth extending from the Islands of Four Mountains to Yakutat Bay.

Scientists from the Midwater Assessment and Conservation Engineering (MACE) Program of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering (RACE) Division routinely conduct acoustic-trawl (AT) stock assessment surveys to estimate the distribution and abundance of walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus).The survey (cruise DY2011-03) was conducted between 14 June and 12 August on the Gulf of Alaska shelf from 50-500 m depth extending from the Islands of Four Mountains to the Chiniak Trough east of Kodiak Island.

The survey was designed with two survey tracks, which covered 3,656 nmi2 of the CBS Convention Specific Area.
