American Samoa Longline Fishery Trip Expenditure (2006 to present)

This is a time-series dataset for trip expenditure data for the American Samoa-based longline fleet from August 2006 to present. The dataset includes 10 variable cost items commonly associated with longline trips (not including labor costs). The cost items collected are: unit price, quantity used, and total cost estimates for diesel fuel, engine oil, bait, ice; and total cost estimates for gear, provisions, and communications. Additional information about the operator and crew are also included.

Cost Earnings Data 2001 - American Samoa Longline

In 2001, 25 vessels > 50 feet in overall length joined the American Samoa longline fleet, which previously had consisted of local, small catamaran-style vessels (called alias) targeting albacore (Thunnus alalunga). The entrance of these modern longliners drew considerable attention due to social, economic, and fishery sustainability concerns. Economic information on 18 vessels were gathered by personal interviews with vessel operators, owners, or managers.

Cost Earnings Data 1993 - Hawaii Longline

These data were collected to support the first cost-earnings study of this fleet. Operational and vessel costs were collected by in-person interviews with vessel owners, captains, and crew. Revenue information was obtained from the Hawaii Department of Aquatic Resources commercial catch reports and NMFS logbooks (fishing effort). A total of 95 vessels (out of 122 active vessels in 1993) were interviewed and M. S. Hamilton, R.E. Curtis, and M.D. Travis conducted the project.

Cost Earnings Survey of NWHI Bottomfish Fleets (2003)

During May-August 2004, face-to-face interviews with owners and/or captains of all NWHI bottomfish vessels were conducted to collect primary information on costs of fishing operations in 2003. Information on physical characteristics of the vessels, motivation of fishermen, and other topics was also collected. Follow-up interviews were conducted in September 2004 and March-April 2005 to collect data missed during the first interviews. M. Pan and A. Griesemer conducted the project.

Honolulu Retail Monitoring Price Data Collection (2007-2011)

This database contains a time series of consumer-level prices for a sample of retail markets in Honolulu between 2007-2011. Data include weekly prices for fish species prevalent in Honolulu retail seafood markets. Additionally, each record contains information on the product form, origin of the fish (if known), labelling schemes, quality (where applicable), and the use of preservation methods (such as CO-treatment).

Pelagic Charter Boat Patrons (1999-2001)

This study describes several aspects of the charter fishing experience, including patrons' motivations for coming to Hawaii and going charter fishing, their related expenses, valuation of the fishing experience in dollar terms, and the characteristics of the quality of the fishing experience. Information was obtained by distributing mail-in survey instruments to patrons at the end of their fishing trips taken during 1999-2001.

Cost Earnings Data 2005 - Hawaii Longline

The data collection project assessed the economic performance of Hawaii-based longline vessels that made trips in 2005. Operational and vessel costs were collected by personal interviews with vessel owners, captains, and crew. Revenue information was generated from the Hawaii Department of Aquatic Resources dealer reports and NMFS logbooks (landings and fishing efforts). The project estimated the cost-earnings for each individual longline vessels.

Additionally, attitudes and perceptions towards fisheries management agencies and current and future management tools are described.
