National Inventory of Marine Mammals (NIMM)

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The collection and maintenance of captive marine mammal information is mandated under Section 104 of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (16 U.S.C. 1374) (MMPA). Consistent with this mandate, the NMFS, Office of Protected Resources, administers an inventory of all permanently captive marine mammals (under NMFS' jurisdiction - cetaceans and pinnipeds, except for walrus). This inventory is in the process of being converted from an antiquated DOS-based system to a new internet accessible interface called the National Inventory of Marine Mammals (NIMM).

US Tuna Cannery Receipts

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The data set contains receipts of tuna destined for canning, from both domestic and imported sources, at cannery locations within the 50 states, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa. Monthly data are available electronically from 1979 to present with new data currently uploaded annually (this may change to quarterly or monthly uploads sometime in 2020).

US Tune Purse Seine Fleet History & Activity Database

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The NMFS SWR collected historical vessel information on the U.S. tuna cannery baitboat and purse seine fleets for many years. The database's first record of a baitboat entering the fleet dates back to 1927. Individual trip dates and locations for the purse seine fleet have been collected since July 1982. Fleet operations have been conducted primarily in the north eastern and western central Pacific Ocean. A quarterly fleet report was published between 1972 and 2004. Hard copies of the quarterly report are on file in the NMFS Long Beach office library.

AFSC/REFM: Stable Isotope collections from the North Pacific 2001-2008

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

d15N and d13C isotopic ratios from multiple groundfish and groundfish prey samples collected on groundfish surveys and by fishery observers onboard commercial fishing vessels in the eastern Bering Sea, and Gulf of Alaska from 2006 through 2008 via NPRB project, NPRB.2006.22.Isotopes, and continued by AFSC.

AFSC/REFM: Aleutian Islands Cooperative Acoustic Survey Study 2006-2008

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The objective of this project was to investigate whether cooperative biomass surveys can be an effective way to manage fisheries at the local scales that are important to predators such as Steller sea lions. To satisfy this objective we conducted wintertime (February-March) acoustic surveys of pollock in the central Aleutian Islands from a commercial vessel equipped with scientific quality ES60 echosounders in 2006, through 2008, and from a NOAA research vessel in 2008.

AFSC/REFM: Nearshore fish survey in northern Bristol Bay, Alaska, July-August 2009

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The project consisted of a nearshore fish, invertebrate, and habitat survey in northern Bristol Bay, Alaska. A 32-ft. gillnet vessel, the F/V Willow was chartered for the survey, and we also used a 20-ft. aluminum skiff with 90-hp. motor for shallow water work. The survey was staged out of Dillingham, Alaska and took place from July 26-August 8, 2009.The main gear types used during the survey were a beach seine and a bottom beam trawl. A surface pair trawl (towed by the vessel and the skiff) was deployed in one location.

AFSC/REFM: Inshore research surveys in the eastern and central Gulf of Alaska, 2010-2013, conducted by the middle trophic level component of the GOA Integrated Ecosystem Research Project

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This dataset contains the results of a series of inshore research surveys that took place during 2010-2013 as part of the Gulf of Alaska Integrated Ecosystem Research Program (GOAIERP), a multidisciplinary study of the GOA ecosystem funded by the North Pacific Research Board. The project is comprised of four groups of investigators, organized as upper, middle, and lower trophic levels plus a modeling group. Investigators from the middle trophic level component conducted the research covered by this dataset.

AFSC/REFM: Acoustic trawl cooperative survey near Shumagin Islands 2007-2013

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

In May of 2006, scientists from the Alaska Fisheries Science Center
participated in a pilot outreach program in Sand Point, Alaska. At the meetings,
fishermen raised a number of concerns about the adequacy of walleye pollock
(Theragra chalcogramma) assessment. The issues appeared to be related to the contrasting
observational scales of fishermen and National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) scientists
responsible for conducting assessment surveys and population modeling. NMFS resource

AFSC/REFM: Movement of Alaska skates (Bathyraja parmifera) in the Bering Sea , determined through conventional tagging

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This dataset contains the results of a tagging study being conducted on the Alaska skate (Bathyraja parmifera) in the eastern Bering Sea. The purpose of the study is to gain a basic understanding of the timing and spatial pattern of movements of Alaska skates in the Bering Sea. The tags used are conventional (i.e. non-electronic) tags that are generally recovered through commercial fishery catches of skates. Skates were tagged aboard the AFSC eastern Bering Sea shelf surveys in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

California Harpoon Fishery

Data provided by  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This data set contains vessel logbook and landings data from harpoon vessels that fish within 200 miles of the California coast, from 1974 to present. The harpoon fishery targets swordfish and occasionally sharks. The fishery is managed by California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The data are owned by CDFW and managed jointly by CDFW and SWFSC.
