This dataset is comprised of routine deployments of two underwater gliders off the coast of Central California, inside or near Monterey Bay. Missions typically last several weeks, and include process studies inside Monterey Bay, or transects to ~250 km offshore from Monterey Bay. The gliders are equipped with a CTD to measure temperature, salinity, and depth, as well as biogeochemical sensors for dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll fluorescence or optical backscatter, and pH.

We are analyzing cross-shore fluxes associated with coastal upwelling filaments in the Central-Southern California sector of the California Current System. We seek to resolve the occurrence, geographic extent, vertical extent, and persistence time of coastal upwelling filaments in a specific region of coastline. We also are quantifying the transport of volume, mass, nutrients, and plankton associated with individual filaments, as well as the net fluxes integrated along a section of coastline.

The overarching goal of this project is to collect high resolution transects across the Gulf Stream. Though the speed of the Gulf Stream greatly exceeds the speed of a glider, gliders can be flown across the current as they are advected downstream. Missions prior to 2015 were conducted downstream (northeast) of Cape Hatteras, primarily between Cape Cod and Bermuda; missions since 2015 begin in Miami, FL and are planned to end on the New England continental shelf.
